The body shape makes the difference

The body shape of a guitar not only defines its appearance but also has a significant influence on responsiveness, dynamics, tone, and playing feel. In the Lakewood Custom Shop, various body shapes are available, allowing you to tailor your instrument specifically to your musical requirements.

The available body shapes include Concert, Auditorium, Grand Concert, Dreadnought, and Jumbo. Whether a compact, balanced shape or a larger body volume with powerful projection – each shape has its own character.

The Lakewood Custom Shop also offers an exceptional range in stringing and configuration: from crossover models with nylon strings to 6-string steel strings and 12-string guitars, all the way to baritone guitars.

Individually tailored to your playing style

In addition to the body shape, numerous dimensions and details can be individually configured. These include, among others:

  • Nut width
  • Scale length from 630 to 680 mm
  • Neck thickness
  • Neck profile
  • Neck-to-body joint at the 12th, 13th, or 14th fret

This allows the instrument to be precisely adapted to your hands, your playing technique, and your musical preferences. The result is a guitar that is not only individually designed in appearance but also feels natural and familiar to play.

The right finish

You can also determine the character of your instrument through its surface finish. The following finish options are available:

closed-pore, satin, open-pore satin, or high gloss.

From an understated, natural look to a classic high-gloss finish, the Custom Shop offers various ways to showcase the selected woods and the individual design of your guitar.

Your Personal Wood Set!

In the Lakewood Custom Shop, you have the opportunity to design your guitar down to the smallest detail according to your personal preferences. A special part of this is the selection of woods.

Both domestic woods from Europe and select woods from around the world are available. Depending on your desired tonal character, appearance, and personal preference, you can individually determine the wood types for the top, back, and sides.

The Lakewood Wood Gallery

In the Lakewood Wood Gallery, you'll find a selection of exceptional wood sets that Lakewood has put together for building Custom Shop instruments.

What makes it special: if you choose a wood set from the gallery, you receive exactly the wood shown in the respective image. Grain, color, and individual pattern of the wood are thus precisely defined, making each instrument a true one-of-a-kind piece.

Alternatively, you can simply choose your desired wood type for the top, back, and sides. Lakewood will then select a matching wood set for your instrument, making sure that the woods work together harmoniously both visually and in terms of their tonal qualities.

This way, step by step, a guitar is created that not only matches your vision but also has its very own personality.

Wood Gallery Examples

#131 | Macassar Ebony

A beautiful 3-piece Macassar ebony set with dark Macassar in the middle and wonderfully grained Macassar pieces for the outer sections. The 3 pieces can be separated with a 0.5 mm maple strip. It hardly gets more elegant than this!

#164 | Padouk Bicolor

Transparent tone with strong bass and treble. A wonderful alternative to East Indian Rosewood that is in no way inferior to it – visually, however, it is considerably more varied and colorful. Alternating areas of intense red and pale yellowish stripes with black lines that almost resemble sapwood, though they are not. This wild, exotic appearance is due to a genetic defect in the wood of individual tree trunks, which nevertheless belong to the same species as "normal" Padouk. The red areas in the wood will turn brownish over the years, depending on the intensity of the UV light they're exposed to.

#128 | Black Walnut

A beautiful, native tonewood that gains an incredible depth under a high-gloss finish. An almost overwhelming amount of "flame" figuring covers this back, making a guitar with this wood something truly special.
